Taganana is a village of about 600 people located on the coast on the northern edge of the Ananaga Mountains. The village sprawls up some cliffs like spider legs from the water. The place is not too touched by tourism, only a few day tourists come with buses over the mountains to dine in some fish restaurants down by the water and to admire the spectacular mountain landscape. To reach Taganana one must first drive 700m up into the Anaga Mountains, either from La Laguna (which is the further way) or from St. Cruz/St. via San Andrés out. From there it takes about half an hour by car. The only access to Taganana drops steeply behind a tunnel. There is also a bus service from St. Cruz. It takes about 45 minutes by bus from there.

You can start hiking directly from the house to get into the mountains. After a few minutes you have left the village. The surrounding mountains are partly densely forested and only partly accessible by hiking trails or more or less hidden goat trails. The sea can be reached in 20 minutes on foot. To get to a beach that allows bathing, however, you have to walk another path or drive 5 to 10 minutes by car. The few and sometimes very rocky beaches around Taganana are wild and dangerous, for example in Benijo. Completely opposite bathing opportunities can be found in Las Teresitas, which is half an hour's drive away. Taganana is not spoiled by the sun. Clouds often hang over the mountains, casting shadows over the place. Continuous rainfall is also possible in the winter months. The advantage is that the mountains are very green and the gardens allow year-round harvests. A reliable weather forecast is not possible. It can be overcast for days or clear and sunny for days. However, it rarely happens that the sun doesn't come out at least once a day, or that you can't go out because of rain. In winter, temperatures can drop to 16 or 17 degrees celsius, but they rarely rise above 20 degrees in winter either. In the evening hours, a fireplace or one of the electric stoves can be very popular in the house. A small shop is available for shopping in the village, and a pharmacy. At the entrance to the village near the church there is a restaurant where you can eat well. More restaurants are down by the water.

The house, Casa Aurelio, you can see within the red circle:

The Anaga Mountains are a very old and heavily eroded volcanic formation. The mountain range is forested in its northern and high-lying parts and overall very green. The climate is comparatively harsh compared to the dry and mostly almost vegetation-free south of Tenerife. The mountains are cut through by rugged gorges (barrancos) and in many parts are almost inaccessible. Towards the sea it drops steeply, sometimes hundreds of meters. But there are also sandy beaches, but mostly stone beaches. Some sandy beaches can only be reached by walking for hours, as can some more or less abandoned settlements. There are a number of marked hiking trails. Because of falling rocks and landslides, the steepness and narrowness of the roads, car drivers are particularly challenged.

The north-west winds bring a lot of moisture into the mountains:
